The American Medical Golfing Society was organized by 8 charter members in 1996 at the first venue for the Society in Kiawah Island, GA. Five members were elected to the board of directors.

In 1997, the Society met at Kingsmill, VA with 18 friends and the nidus of charter members. At this meeting it was decided to change the name to the AmericanCanadian Medical Golfing Society to be inclusive of friends who had joined from Canada.

In 1998, the Society again returned to Kiawah Island, SC to qualify for the first annual matches against the Medical Golfing Society of the United Kingdom. At this venue 15 members battled it out for the opportunity to compete with the British. The first annual AMGS/MGS matches were held in 1998 at Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey, England, which was the site of the 1981 Ryder Cup matches.

In 1999 the Spring Qualifying tournament was held at Whistler in Victoria, BC with 26 physicians competing to play the matches with the British in Bakersfield, CA in the fall. In 2000 the Spring qualifying tournament was taken to the Southeast and Sandestin, FL. The AMGS/MGS matches in 2000 were held at Forest of Arden in Warwickshire, England near Birmingham.

In 2001 the Spring qualifying tournament was held at Gold Canyon in Arizona. The competition with the Brits was in the midwest at Geneva National in Lake Geneva, WI. This meeting was in the fall after the 9-11 attack on the U.S. by the terrorists. Even so, 11 British doctors and many of their wives made the trip from Great Britain to the U.S. to compete.

2002 brought the Spring qualifier to Myrtle Beach, SC to vie for the oppor- tunity to compete with the British at Alwoodley and Moortown Golf Clubs in Yorkshire, England. Alwoodley is the first golf course designed by Dr. Alister Mackenzie in 1907 and Moortown was also designed by him in 1909 and was the 1929 site of the Ryder Cup.

In 2003 the qualifying tournament was held at La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, CA. The British matches were held at La Cantera Golf Club in San Antonio, CA. In 2004, the qualifying tournament was held at Naples Grande Golf Club in Naples, FL. The British matches were held at The Celtic Manor in Wales, England which is the site of the 2010 Ryder Cup.
